Valldemossa

THE VALLEY OF THE MUSA

About Valldemossa

Valldemossa is a quiet traditional village with cobbled streets and pretty stone houses, each doorway and street is lined with cute pots with green plants and flowers making the little town one of the most beautiful in Mallorca. The village is the highest on the island at 435 meters above sea level and is nestled in the stunning lush Tramontana Mountains.

The old Carthusian monastery known as the ‘Real Cartuja de Valldemossa’ is a centrepiece to the village, and was originally founded as a royal residence until it was changed to a monastery in 1399. Writers, artists and composers found inspiration in Valldemossa, including composer Chopin, who lived in Valldemossa during the winter of 1838 – 39. It was at the Real Cartuja that Chopin spent the winter with the French writer Aurore Dupin, better known as her alias George Sand.

The charming little streets of the village are filled with cafes, galleries and gift shops. Traditional family bakeries can still be found in Valldemossa and serve up the local delight of ‘coca de patata’ translated to ‘potato cake’.
