THE GARDENS OF ALFABIA

Passing the “Raixa”, the museum is sited right at the entrance to the tunnel that connects Palma to Sóller. The access consists of a wide avenue, or Roman “paseo de salon”, with three lanes of large plane trees, that reaches the “Clastra” ( the typical “patio” of Majorcan country houses of a certain importance, called “possesions” ).

Historic references indicate that this was once the home of the Arabic Viceroy of the island. The structure of the house has Roman-Andalusian roots. We find features and elements of different styles: Arabic, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Roman, Rococo and even English in the decoration of the rooms. The gardens are certainly a fine example of Moorish garden design, where the emphasis is on water and irrigation.

RAIXA

At the foot of the mountains Serra de Tramuntana , Raixa is part of Spanish cultural heritage for its high historical and artistic value. Located in a privileged place that was highly valued by the Arabs when establishing their settlements, because the area has one of the most valued resources – water. You can find it in the area of Bunyola (direction Sóller). Historical references date Raixa back to the Islamic period when it was a farmhouse that is documented with the name of Arraixa, which would be owned by Beni- Atzar .

CAN MOREY DE SANT MARTÍ MUSEUM

Previously the J. Torrents Lladó Museum, the Can Morey de Santmartí Museum was inaugurated in June 2012. It houses original works by Salvador Dalí and is entirely dedicated to him offering 250 artistic pieces. The gallery is located within an old medieval Mallorquin house near Cathedral. The picturesque atmosphere of the three floors of the old mansion with the seating in its traditional interior patio will keep you engaged.

THEATRE OF PALMA

“Teatro Principal de Palma” opened its doors on August 27th in 1667 carrying the name of “Casa de las Comedias” (House of Comedies). It was a huge project at the time offering capacity for 800 people. It started turmoil in the circles of theologians who were gathering to decide if the comedy performances was acceptable. After a fire destruction in 1858 the theatre was restored according to its original design.

Since then various renovations took place and after the final one, in 2007, the modern theatre keeping its historic character was inaugurated.

PALMA TOWN HALL

The Palma Town Hall – ‘Ayuntamiento’, popularly known as Cort, occupies the city’s epicenter. The Hospital of Sant Andreu used to occupy the site of this 17th century council building, and later the main offices of the University. In 1718, the University was dissolved and the Town Hall institution was created. The popular name of Cort comes from reuniting the city’s court in this square up until 1811.

BARCELÓ FOUNDATION

Beautiful neo-Gothic mansion was originally a residence of the Marquis of Reguer-Rullan, who started the construction in 1833.

Today it serves as Palma old town’s museum of archeology, Gothic altar pieces as well as the fine and decorative arts. It carries features typical for Catalan Gothic architecture seen in many medieval houses in Palma, such as the charismatic indoor patios with beautiful staircases and arches.

MUSEUM ES BALUARD

The museum of modern and contemporary art is located within the bastion Sant Pere from 16th century, one of the most important landmarks of the city of Palma being part of the Renaissance wall that surrounded the city until the beginning of the 20th Century. In 1952, after more than three hundred years of service, the bastion relinquished it military function. Later, it passed into private hands. In 1963 the new owners demolished a large part of the western curtain wall of the bastion. After this incident the land passed to public use and at the end of 1980s. In 1997, Palma City Council built the museum.

FOUNDATION PILAR Y JOAN MIRÓ

Joan Miró was a Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramicist combining abstraction with Surrealist imagination.During his first visit in Paris, he met Pablo Picasso, who had a great impact on his artwork.

Miró went to live in Mallorca in 1959, where he also died 90 years old in 1983. His studio located in Cala Mayor, approx. 3 km from the center of Palma is a museum dedicated to Miró, left untouched since his death.

ANTIQUE DOLLS MUSEUM

Antique Dolls Museum of Palma, located near Cathedral, exhibits a collection of more than 500 antique dolls. The collection offers a look at the origins of the dolls’ history, including religious figures made of wood and terra-cotta and even pre-Colombian cloth dolls recovered from children’s graves.

DIOCESAN MUSEUM OF MALLORCA

Hidden behind the Cathedral, the ‘Museu Diocesà de Mallorca’ is a small museum offering religious and historical artefacts, prayer books, tapestries from the times of Arabs, ceramics, etc. The permanent exposition consists of 200 historic pieces from churches, monasteries, convents and private collections from all over the island.
