DRY STONE ROUTE GR221

The dry stone route GR221 ‘la ruta de piedra en seco’ is a very popular 135 km, 8 day trek along the mountains on the west side of Mallorca. The pathways along the walk are lined with old cobbled paths, which were originally built to link the village and estates on the mountain range. The route is famous for its landscape of olive trees on terraces with dry-stone walls and runs from Port D’Andratx all the way to Pollenca.

PORT OF VALLDEMOSSA

You will find the Port of Valldemossa where the vast Mallorcan coastline is hiding at the base of the mountain valley, there is a tiny cluster of fisherman houses and small fishing boats. A day at the port can be enjoyed swimming in the perfectly clear blue sea, eating fresh seafood in the restaurant and relaxing on the cove enjoying the spectacular view.

COSTA NORD

Inaugurated in 2000 and financed by Michael Douglas, who owns the house S’Estaca, the house previously owned by the Archduke Ludwig Salvador. The Costa Nord is the main cultural center around the Serra de Tramontana. The visitor is guided through the history of the Balearic Island projecting a documentary produced and presented by Michael Douglas, the tour continues with the introduction of the figure of Archduke Ludwig Salvador of Austria aboard his yacht ‘Nixe’.

Costa Nord complements the cultural visit with the service of cafe restaurant offering lunchtime Majorcan buffet for 14.90 € together with Majorcan desserts and drinks with possibility to repeat as many times as you’d like. The Friday nights in the summer are hosting ‘Nixe Jazz Club’ with a fantastic gourmet menu for 29 €. On Saturday summer nights you can enjoy the live opera dinners ‘Notti of Bel Canto’. Ideal setting to organise events, concerts, corporate dinners, meetings or weddings.

CHOPIN’S CELL

The cell nº4 is the authentic cell where Frederic Chopin spent the winter in 1838/1839. Accompanied by George Sand, he rented the cell, which consisted of three rooms and a garden, situated in Royal Monastery (Real Cartuja). In the central hall of the museum you can find the original rental documents, expense accounts of the couple on the island, including the costs of Chopin’s medical treatments and the costs of transport of his piano to Valldemossa.

KING SANCHO’S PALACE

The Palace was built at the beginning of the fourteenth century, ordered by King Jaime II, so that his son Sancho could live in comfort and and find relief from the asthma disease he suffered. The palace was used for the royals rest place and whilst residing there hunting was the main activity.

CAN PEDRO

Can Pedro opened in July 1967, the restaurant has remained unchanged through the times, giving it a truly Mallorquin and rustic ambiance. The chef bases his cooking on Mallorquin dishes and fresh produce of the season.

ES ROQUISSAR

Tucked away in a corner of the Plaza Cartuja in Valldemossa, with a lovely view of the church and square. The cuisine is a fusion of Spanish tapas with Asian and Latin influences. The desserts are also hugely popular serving dishes such as ‘blackberry tiramisu’.

CAN MARIO

This restaurant is on the upper floor of a rustic three story house that was once a hostel, and is a cultural heritage of Valldemossa. The decor is homely with antique furniture and paintings on the wall by people who have stayed here in its hostel days. The restaurant looks out over the mountain valley and has great views over to Palma in the distance. Serving traditional and delicious Mallorquin food.
